A trail cap should be assessed on three points: weight, sweat wicking and staying in place without having to tighten it. If you have to tighten it while running, it is not the right cap. Everything else - stiff or soft visor, colour, five-panel construction - comes down to preference and body shape.
Our men's range is divided into three families. The Sunkar is our most varied model, with sixteen designs available, from the Breton flag to the Henaff marinière. The Exosun draws on our SAA, Society and Snow Gold collections. The Heol Redek is UPF 50 certified, the highest protection rating in the range, in black or white at €40. All are designed in Brittany, using our own materials.
How to choose your trail cap
Weight and bulk
A trail cap should be easy to forget you are wearing. On a long run, a few dozen extra grams turn into pressure on the forehead and a sweaty area. It should also be able to fold and be stored in a vest pocket when the sun goes down, without retaining a pronounced crease.
Sweat wicking
This is what distinguishes a sports cap from a casual cap. The front sweatband should absorb and then wick away moisture, not retain it. A cap that holds onto moisture becomes heavy, slips down the forehead and makes sweat run into the eyes exactly when the terrain becomes technical. The breathability of the crown matters just as much as that of the sweatband.
Secure fit without tightening
A good cap stays in place because of its fit, not because of the tension in its fastening system. If you have to tighten it firmly to keep it in place, it will leave a mark on your forehead and become painful after three hours. Test it by shaking your head from side to side with a loose adjustment: it should not move.
The visor
A stiff visor provides better protection from low-angle sun and rain, but it deforms if crushed in a bag. A soft visor can be stored anywhere and is better suited to runners who alternate between wearing and storing it. On long, exposed routes, the stiff visor remains more comfortable for the eyes.
Sun protection
Not all fabrics filter UV rays in the same way, and a thin cap may let some radiation reach the scalp. The UPF rating measures this filtration: UPF 50 means that only one-fiftieth of UV rays passes through the fabric. This is the certification of our Heol Redek. For the neck and ears, which the cap does not cover, the bucket hat remains more effective.

Trail running isn't run in uniform
The trail running cap market often offers three technical colors and nothing else. This is an impoverished view of what this sport is: an outdoor activity where people spend hours outside, often in groups, and where equipment eventually becomes part of the runner's identity.
That's why our Sunkar comes in more than fifteen designs, from the Breton flag to the Breton sailor stripe, from paisley to leopard print. The technical product is the same; what changes is the ability to choose. We are continuously expanding this range.
Kinetik is a Breton family business. We design our products and materials ourselves rather than picking from supplier catalogs, and our athletes test them before approval. We also equip clubs, teams, and race organizers with custom gear in their colors.
Frequently asked questions
Cap or bucket hat for trail running?
The cap keeps the sides of your field of vision clear and is easier to pack away, making it more versatile on technical terrain. The bucket hat provides better protection for the back of the neck and ears from the sun, at the cost of slightly reduced peripheral vision. In high heat and prolonged exposure, the bucket hat has the advantage; the rest of the time, the cap is sufficient. Our two ranges are available in parallel: see the men's bucket hats.
How to keep the cap from blowing away or slipping?
A properly sized cap stays in place because of its fit, not because of the adjustment. If it moves, the head circumference usually does not match, rather than there being an adjustment problem. Simple test: use a loose adjustment, then shake your head from side to side. If it moves, change size instead of tightening it further.
Rigid or soft brim?
The rigid brim offers better protection from low sunlight and rain and retains its shape. The soft brim folds and fits into a vest pocket without creasing. If you frequently alternate between wearing and storing it during an outing, choose the soft one. If you keep it on from start to finish during exposed races, the rigid one is more comfortable.
How do you measure your head circumference?
Place a flexible tape measure just above your eyebrows and ears, at the widest point of your head, without tightening it. This measurement determines the size, not your clothing size. Then refer to the size guide on the model's product page, as head circumferences vary from one range to another.
How do you wash a running cap?
Hand wash in lukewarm water, without fabric softener: fabric softeners clog technical fibers and prevent moisture wicking. Pay particular attention to the sweatband, where salt accumulates. Air-dry while maintaining the shape of the crown, never in a dryer or on a radiator, as these can deform the brim.
Can a trail running cap also be used on the road?
Yes, absolutely. The requirements are the same: lightness, sweat wicking, and a secure fit without tightness. Trail running simply involves tougher conditions, prolonged exposure and uneven terrain, so a cap designed for it works everywhere else.
What does UPF 50 mean on a cap?
The UPF rating measures the proportion of ultraviolet radiation that the fabric allows through. UPF 50 means that one fiftieth gets through, meaning 98% is filtered out. This is the level of our Heol Redek. During a long race in direct sunlight or at altitude, the difference is less about immediate comfort than cumulative exposure of the scalp and face.
Can a cap be customized in a club's colors?
Yes, we equip clubs, teams, and race organizers with custom gear. The terms, minimum quantities, and lead times are listed on our pages for clubs and event organizers.
