The essentials

A running neck gaiter is a seamless fabric tube worn around the neck, pulled up over the face, or transformed into a headband. Its purpose is not to keep you warm but to adapt: pull it up when the wind picks up, lower it as soon as the effort increases, without ever stopping.

Our Protektor range includes twenty designs, from the Breton flag to bandana, leopard, gingham, poppy, and ocean flower prints. Two models are available in merino wool, for winter outings. All are designed in Brittany, using our own materials.

How to choose your neck gaiter

The material determines the season

Technical synthetic fabrics dry quickly and do not retain moisture. They are the ones we keep from spring through fall, and in mild winter weather: we wear them around the neck, pull them up when needed, and they never become heavy.

Merino wool changes the game. It insulates even when wet, regulates temperature instead of simply trapping heat, and resists odors over several outings. It is the material for sessions in very cold weather, and the choice of our two MerinoWool Protektor models.

Uses that go far beyond the neck

A seamless fabric tube can be worn in at least five ways. Around the neck, it is the obvious use. Pulled up over the nose and mouth, it cuts out the cold wind that burns your throat in winter and filters dust on dry trails. As a headband, it absorbs sweat and keeps hair out of the way. On the back of the neck under a cap, it protects from the sun where the visor does not cover. And as an improvised beanie, tied on one side, when the temperature drops more than expected.

This versatility is what makes it one of the few accessories you take with you all year round, whatever the forecast.

The absence of seams

A seam placed at the neck rubs, and irritation in that spot quickly becomes unbearable on a long outing. A seamless tube eliminates the problem by design. It is also what makes it possible to wear it over your face without feeling extra thickness against your lip.

The design

The neck gaiter is one of the few pieces of equipment that is fully visible and costs almost nothing to replace. That is why our range includes twenty designs rather than three technical colors: it is the piece that brings a little character to an otherwise highly functional outfit.

The accessory you take with you without thinking

Some pieces of equipment take a long time to choose, while others eventually become something you always take with you without thinking. The neck gaiter belongs to the second category. It weighs a few dozen grams, rolls up into a vest pocket, and solves five different problems depending on how you wear it.

That is probably why it has become the most customized item in a runner's wardrobe. Clubs add their colors, race organizers turn them into race souvenirs, and runners collect several of them when they only have one pair of shoes.

Kinetik is a Breton family business. We design our products and materials ourselves rather than selecting from supplier catalogs, and our athletes test them before approval. We also equip clubs, teams, and race organizers with custom gear in their own colors.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a neck gaiter and a bandana?

The classic bandana is a square piece of fabric that you tie. A neck gaiter is a seamless tube that stays in place on its own and can be worn in several ways: around the neck, over the face, as a headband, or as neck protection. Many neck gaiters feature bandana patterns, which is why the two terms are often used interchangeably.

How to wear a neck gaiter while running?

Around the neck in its basic position, pulled up over the nose and mouth when the wind is cold or there is dust, folded into a headband to absorb sweat, or tucked under the cap to cover the back of the neck in the sun. Its advantage is that you can change configurations during a race without stopping.

Merino wool or technical fabric?

Technical fabric dries faster and is suitable from mid-season through summer. Merino wool insulates even when wet, regulates temperature, and resists odors over multiple outings: it is the choice for extreme cold. For year-round use, many runners own both.

Does a neck gaiter make it difficult to breathe when worn over the face?

With breathable technical fabric, no, as long as the intensity remains moderate. At high intensity, however, even thin fabric becomes uncomfortable once moistened by your breath. Wearing it over the face is intended for stretches exposed to cold wind or dust, not for an entire session.

Is there one size?

The tubular design is made to fit the vast majority of body types, with no adjustment or size selection required. This is also what makes it an easy gift and a popular customization product for clubs and race organizers.

How do you wash a neck gaiter?

At 30 °C, without fabric softener: fabric softeners clog technical fibers and prevent moisture from being wicked away. For merino wool, use a delicate or hand wash and dry flat to prevent any deformation. In both cases, do not tumble dry.

Is a neck gaiter also useful in summer?

Yes, and this is its most underestimated use. Worn around the neck under a cap, it covers the area left exposed to the sun by the visor, which is also one of the most sensitive areas during a long race. Moistened at a water station, it also provides a cooling effect that lasts for several kilometers.

Can a neck gaiter be customized in a club's colors?

Yes, it is one of our most requested customization products, by both clubs and race organizers who use them as event souvenirs. The details, minimum quantities, and lead times are listed on our dedicated pages for clubs and event organizers.
